How To Build Outdoor Fireplace

If you are asked to picture a fireplace, you would immediately frame a cute little cabin, with some burning logs right in the middle of a cozy room. Most of the people don’t even consider or think about an outdoor fireplace in the middle of a patio or out in the backyard. The fact about them is that these fireplaces can be one of the most amazing things you could build for yourself, and they can serve a lot of purpose too. I know that indoor fireplaces offer a nice cozy heat to cuddle in, but an outdoor fireplace can provide you with a lot of other benefits. There are even a lot more options in outdoor fireplaces when it comes to design and you can incorporate them to match the exterior of your house, for a nice elegant feeling.

When you start considering an outdoor fireplace, this decision should involve some careful planning. You must keep one thing in mind, that if an outdoor fireplace is added to your yard, it can extend the space of your house a great deal, and if you think and position it properly, it can actually be used all year around. You can instantly turn that vacant backyard into a unique and comfortable place to enjoy family times, if you just plan it out appropriately. Here are some tips that I have to offer for those out there looking for the answer of the question how to build outdoor fireplace.

The very first thing you should consider is researching about the building code of conduct that is applied to your area. Some communities might have very strict regulations regarding building plans and the others might be extremely lenient. Again, it differs from place to place. It would be best to just call up your local municipal buildings and tell them that you are planning on building an outdoor fireplace, and ask about the rules and regulations applied to your area, before you plan on getting a specific design for your fireplace.

There are cases where you actually have to apply for a permit for adding structures to your yard. For applying, you must ensure you have all the necessary application forms and information, don’t ever consider yourself too safe when it comes to areas of this matter, so always be sure to take the necessary precautions.

Once you are done with taking all the preliminary steps, you need to start choosing what style of an outdoor fireplace would suit your exterior. The most popular fireplace units are stone ones, which are usually self-contained. However, you might want to look into a more open concept and take advantage of some of the benefits of other types, such as brick fire pits. The important thing is deciding first, because once you are done building your fireplace, it would be too difficult to make any changes or adaptations.

Go on Ebay and look for JDW Design Systems from Tucson, Arizona. If you want to try to build an outdoor fireplace on your own and save thousands in contractor fees, they have detailed step-by-step design plans for the “do it yourself” types who like to build. I used one of their plans and my backyard fireplace looks fantastic. The whole family enjoys it and it’s great for parties.

Although informative for the novice (I suppose), this article should be titled “Things to Think About Before Building an Outdoor Fireplace”. Doesn’t instruct on how to build one.
