Flower garden seeds are planted only during the last part of the winter or in spring by most of the farmers but some type of seeds can be planted in autumn season also where the need of gardener is less. Autumn is the season where the growth of spring yearly plants, cold loving annuals, biennials and some perennials start to grow. They can decorate your garden in this period and starts towards rest in the autumn season. Cool loving annuals like sweet alyssum, calendula, candytuft and sweet pea,  are all rapidly growing plants which can decorate your garden in a nice manner.

Seeds sown in the autumn season have more rate of sprouting than the seeds sown in winter season. The plants suiting for sowing of seeds in autumn season is California poppy, Mexican tulip poppy, California bluebell, blue woodruff, Calkia, bells of Ireland, scarlet sage, love in the mist and snapdragon. Self sowing annuals must be started in the autumn because they are hardy plants and this climate suits for rapid growth.

Biennials, having a life span of 2 years are the plants in which first year results in growth of leaves and blossoming of flowers are seen in the next year. The sowing of seeds of these plants must be done in the period between late summer and early autumn. Sweet William, Hollyhock, foxglove, Canterbury bells, black eyed Susan and evening primrose are some of the biennials. Perennials also have same nature as biennials but the only difference is that the life span of the plant. Perennials have long life span than other kind of plants. The purple coneflower, sunflower, salvia species and columbine are examples of perennials.

Germination is the main intension while you are sowing flower garden seeds. There are some specific differences between some seeds. Perennials need cold stratification for growth which can be provided directly in winter season. During fall, cold weather can be provided by using cold frame. Scratching of seeds is also done which helps in roughening of seed coat to absorb a required amount of water.

Bursting of seeds can be achieved by soaking the seeds in warm water but it should be planted as soon as possible after the bursting stage. An acid like vinegar is required for rapid germination of bushes and woody trees. Forest plants can be germinated using fire treatment. Pre-treatment is only the proper way protecting seeds.
